A vigil will be held for Terrell Mayes, Jr., the three-year-old boy who was killed this week after he was hit by a stray bullet went through the exterior of his north Minneapolis home.
The family is asking for community support to help to pay for the funeral, said VJ Smith, president of the anti-violence group MAD DADS, which is helping organize the vigil. Donations can be made in Mayes' name at any M&I Bank office, he said. The vigil will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the corner of 26th and Colfax Avenue North in Minneapolis.
Smith says some people may not think vigils accomplish anything, but he says they help grieving family members cope with their loss.
"They love seeing the community support them. They love seeing people surround them. They love seeing people that really care about crime and violence in our community come together," Smith said. "It's critical. It's important and it's a must for this family."
