RE: Additional State Budget Cuts

The state of Wisconsin has informed us that we will have to cut our operating budget for 2011-13 over and above the $8 million that was previously ordered last summer. The Department of Administration has told the UW System to prepare for additional cuts of between $65.7 million and $113.2 million.

The numbers are still being worked out, but our tentative share of that cut is between $2.52 million and $4.35 million over the biennium. That obviously puts a big hole in our budget.

Therefore, I am directing all departments to immediately freeze their hiring processes until we can develop a rational and reasonable way to handle this new budget cut. The freeze will remain in effect until December 1, 2011, at the minimum.

We have already started to communicate with our legislative delegation about the potential impact of these cuts. However, because the total cut amount was included in the 2011-13 state budget, our ability to change the decision is limited at best.

We will communicate additional information as it becomes available.

(I'm posting on this bit of Wisconsin news, because a lot of Minnesota higher-ed types have connections to Wisconsin colleges and universities located near the state line.)
