Assistant principal injured at Edison school dance

An assistant principal at Edison High School in Minneapolis is recovering after being injured during an incident at a school dance.

Officials say more than 250 students were at Edison High's homecoming Friday night. Toward the end of the dance, a crowd of students suddenly rushed to retrieve their belongings, creating "disorder and confusion," according to assistant principal Jon Peterson in a voice message to families.

"Edison staff members and Minneapolis police officers responded to the situation. There were no reported student injuries. However, one Edison staff member sustained injuries and was immediately attended to by care providers," Peterson's voice message states.

District officials confirm another assistant principal, Jerry Pedersen, was injured and briefly hospitalized, but aren't releasing information on how he was hurt.

Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty told MPR news an officer who witnessed the incident reported to investigators that Mr. Pedersen was struck with a chair. Pedersen was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.

District officials say Pedersen went to work Monday but was sent home to recover further. They add the incident is still under review and student discipline is possible.

Police say a juvenile suspect has been identified and charges are expected.
