Sick horses taken from East Bethel breeder

An Animal Humane Society investigator has seized two emaciated horses from a long-time breeder in East Bethel who has been convicted of animal cruelty in the past.

Investigator Keith Streff says eight additional horses could be seized later from Lowell Friday's farm. Streff and two veterinarians went to the farm Monday at the urging of animal rights advocates. The group alleged many of Friday's horses are starving and living in filthy conditions.

Gina Benson, from Wisconsin Equine Rescue, says she recently toured the farm and was devastated by what she said were "walking skeletons." The St. Paul Pioneer Press says Friday was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty in 2007 in the negligent death of a colt and placed on a year of probation.

Friday did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
