High winds delay some flights at Twin Cities airport

Travelers flying out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport could face delays this evening due to strong winds.

Strong winds have already led to the closure of one of the airport's four runways, said airport spokesman Patrick Hogan. Right now, that hasn't impacted many flights. The airport reported an average 15-minute delay on arrivals and no weather-related flight cancellations this afternoon.

However, if the winds increase this evening, the airport could be forced to close all but one runway. Hogan said that would affect about two-thirds of all flights.

The National Weather Service predicts winds could reach 20 miles per hour this evening, with gusts up to 28 miles per hour. It predicts wind speeds will drop to 10 to 16 miles per hour after 10 p.m.
