Hiking out to bear dens
Researchers, university students and other interested persons begin a roughly 1-mile hike into the woods to check on a female bear and her cubs on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in northwest Minnesota. The outing is part of an ongoing research project to assess the movement and food preferences of black bears.
