A rare orchid is blooming and will be on display at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen.
The Phragmipedium kovachii orchid is a highlight of the arboretum's Great Hall of Orchids display opening Saturday.
This orchid, which has a vibrant magenta bloom, was discovered in 2002 in Peru. Jerry Fischer, owner of Twin Cities-based Orchids Limited, grew the species from seed.
The new orchid will be exhibited for only one week, through next Saturday, Feb. 19. The rest of the Great Hall of Orchids display will continue through March 13 in the arboretum's Oswald Visitor Center.
