This one's for the introverts among us -- from the It's-Not-What-You-Know-But-Who-You-Know Department:

Seven Reasons to Get to Know Your Professor.

The essence of the article: People tend to help acquaintances and friends more than total strangers, so start getting to know your profs.

1. You can get a great job reference including letters of recommendation.

2. Many endowed scholarships are based on professor recommendation.

3. Teachers may have connections to job leads.

4. You will enjoy class more.

5. You will have more motivation to do well in the class.

6. You will gain networking skills that are valuable for your future.

7. Professors make great mentors.

One piece of advice it gives:

Remember, teachers are busy and mentorship is a two-way street. Therefore, you need to take the first step in the relationship building process.

(I'm curious, though: Do many students really float through college, largely disconnected from faculty? I'd be curious to hear your take.)
