DNR: Zebra mussels widespread in Lake Minnetonka

Officials have confirmed that a zebra mussel infestation in Lake Minnetonka is widespread.

Zebra mussels were first discovered in the popular west metro lake July 27. The Department of Natural Resources said Monday an extensive survey confirms they're present in multiple locations there. It found zebra mussels at 10 of 48 sites checked.

Luke Skinner, supervisor of the DNR's invasive species unit, says the widespread distribution of young zebra mussels in the eastern half of Lake Minnetonka indicates a breeding population has been in the lake for at least one year.

Zebra mussels can crowd out native species and have very sharp shells.

Officials have scheduled two public meetings, for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, where residents and lake users can ask questions.
