A second group of school districts in southern Minnesota is proposing to start classes before Labor Day, a concept opposed by the state's tourism industry and State Fair supporters.
Fairmont Area Schools Superintendent Joe Brown told his school board Tuesday that the district has met with 20 other districts in south-central Minnesota to discuss making a proposal to the state Department of Education.
The new year would mean the first semester would at the Christmas break. It would also give students more instruction days before high-stakes testing in the spring.
The Sentinel of Fairmont reports Brown told the board the proposal would be submitted in the next few months.
A group of 25 districts in southwestern Minnesota have received permission to start before Labor Day starting this fall.
