Gov. Tim Pawlenty holds a news conference Wednesday on a federal education grant program after policy changes he wanted didn't make it through the Legislature.
The Republican governor had threatened not to apply for the second round of the "Race to the Top" program unless his proposals were approved.
Pawlenty wanted a raft of changes that included ways to weed out poorly performing teachers and get professionals from other fields into teaching jobs.
Pawlenty has said his education department wouldn't apply for up to $175 million from the federal program unless the changes became law. Minnesota lost out on the first round of grants.
