St. Paul Jewish day school stays open, but with fewer grades

A Jewish day school in St. Paul will stay open, after all, but with fewer grades.

The board that runs Talmud Torah of St. Paul voted Wednesday to keep the private school open next year but with only kindergartners through fourth grade. The school currently has classes through eighth grade.

Declining enrollment has threatened to shutter the school entirely, but principal Sara Lynn Newberger says some parents fund-raising and other efforts allowed the school to stay open.

"I'm very excited that we have the opportunity to move this school forward, and I'm very hopeful that there's a possibility here to grow and flourish," Newberger said.

Newberger says she expects the pared-back school will only have about 30 students next year, but new efforts will be made to both recruit both more students and donations.
