St. Paul has new way to fight domestic violence

Authorities in the city of St. Paul are changing the way they handle crimes of domestic violence.

Authorities are launching their "Blueprint for Safety" on Thursday. It's an integrated set of protocols designed to reduce homicides stemming from domestic violence.

Among other things, the Blueprint allows for greater sharing of information - so a probation officer, for example, will have information at hand about prior threats made by a suspect.

It also gives police a framework to better assess whether a situation could become potentially lethal.

City Attorney John Choi says his office has already implemented part of the Blueprint. He says it has sped up the way his office handles suspects who have fled from the scene by the time police arrived.

Choi says this part of the Blueprint alone is already helping prevent homicides.
