The St. Croix River is no longer expected to reach flood stage in Stillwater.
An updated forecast from the National Weather Service says the St. Croix is now expected to crest at 86.3 feet early Friday in Stillwater, several inches below flood stage at 87 feet. The river was close to 86 feet Wednesday evening.
The river had previously been expected to crest at flood stage early Saturday.
But forecaster Jim Taggart says upstream conditions have improved and no significant rainfall is expected in the next seven days.
Officials say the Stillwater Lift Bridge will remain closed for now. Motorists can detour south to Interstate 94 at Hudson, Wis., or north to Highway 243 at Osceola, Wis., to cross the St. Croix.
