It took 19 rounds and nearly three hours of competition before an eighth-grader from Albertville emerged as the state's top speller.
Jed Rothstein correctly spelled 'xanthochromia' to land a spot in the national competition June 2-4 in Washington, D.C.
Rothstein beat two other contestants left in the 19th round of competition Tuesday afternoon at the Minnesota Multi-Regional State Spelling Bee in Fergus Falls.
Devin Johnson, a seventh grade student from Duluth, was knocked out on the word 'troglobilont'. Annandale eighth grader Christina Huling went down on the word 'irremeable'.
