A proposal to ask voters to let the Legislature call itself into special session gets its first look on Thursday.

The proposed constitutional amendment is on the agenda for a House government committee.

The bill would allow top leaders in the House and Senate - including majority leaders, the Senate president, House speaker and rules committees - to call special sessions lasting no more than seven days.

Right now, only the governor can call special sessions.

The same House panel will also take up a proposed constitutional amendment that would abolish the office of the lieutenant governor.

Amending the Minnesota Constitution requires approval from both houses of the Legislature and a majority of voters in a general election.
