House Republicans seek commission to streamline state operations

Republicans in the Minnesota House say they want to create a new panel that would recommend ways to streamline state government operations.

They say a 12-member Sunset Commission would help save tax dollars by eliminating duplication and inefficiencies within and among state agencies.

Republican Rep. Joyce Peppin of Rogers says a similar initiative in Texas closed 58 agencies and saved $783 million over three decades. Peppin said the panel would also review all future proposals to create new agencies, boards, commissions or programs.

"The task of this group is really to look at everything in whole and find out which agencies and programs make sense to continue, and which agencies need to be consolidated or eliminated," Peppin said.

The House GOP proposal also proposes the creation of an Innovation Commission that would focus on making government services more efficient through new technology.
