The Minnesota Health Department is warning that it's the time of year when the norovirus peaks in the state.
Noroviruses are the most common cause of food-related illness in Minnesota. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache and body aches.
While the symptoms are unpleasant, the preventive measures are simple and painless. The department recommends three simple steps: Wash hands properly, prepare and handle food properly and if you get ill, stay home and don't prepare food for others.
Dr. Kirk Smith leads the department's food-borne disease unit. He says people should remember that they can continue to spread the virus for several days after they get over the symptoms.
