The Minnesota Senate has voted to extend the General Assistance Medical Care program due to run out of money next month.
The bill from Democratic Sen. Linda Berglin passed on a 45-20 vote.
Berglin says the plan would cover nearly 85,000 low-income adults over the next 16 months, by tapping nearly $160 million from the state's general fund and paying hospitals less for treating patients on the program.
Berglin says Minnesota's social services system could unravel if the health care program goes away without a backup plan.
Republicans objected to the vote on a busy day when Gov. Tim Pawlenty delivered his last State of the State speech. They wanted more time to study the proposal.
