Minn. Senate to vote on $1B public works bill

A $1 billion construction projects bill gets its first big vote on Tuesday in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Democrats aim to get the package to Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty's desk this month.

Backers say the bonding bill will put thousands to work building new college buildings, bridges, civic centers, trails and airport hangars. The state would borrow money by issuing bonds to pay for the projects.

A House version of the bill is expected to get a vote next week.

The legislative proposals top Pawlenty's recommendations by more than $300 million, but the governor has the authority to strip individual projects from the bill or veto the whole thing.
