Transportation officials expect that road conditions will improve for tonight's evening commute, as the snow has stopped falling in many areas and crews have been working to salt major roads.
"We should have a pretty good handle on it because it's not snowing anymore and we have been out putting down some chemicals," said MnDOT spokesperson Kent Barnard.
Earlier in the day, light snowfall in parts of Minnesota fell on already icy roads, making for a slippery combination for motorists.
The State Patrol reported 146 crashes and 66 vehicles off the road by mid-afternoon, including rollovers on several highways in the Twin Cities.
State Patrol Capt. Matt Langer said drivers should use caution on highways.
"It's just the light snow on top on what is already a relatively slippery surface that's giving us the majority of the problems today," Langer said.
