Prosecutors on Thursday filed second-degree murder charges against a 25-year-old man accused of firing the shot that killed a man outside a St. Paul apartment building.
Rashad Lamont Burch was arrested Tuesday in the death of 24-year-old Dwight Raymond Tate. Burch is being held in the Ramsey County jail.
According to court documents, witnesses' accounts to police pointed to Burch as the man who pulled out a handgun and shot another man during a fight outside the apartment complex at 1619 E. Maryland Ave.
Police found Tate after an SUV that was taking him to the hospital crashed a couple miles away. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where he died.
Police investigating the shooting returned to the apartment complex a few hours later after a witness told them she saw people who were involved in the fight. Three police officers ended up exchanging fire with one suspect. The suspect was killed and one of the police officers was shot in the leg.
Police believe the shootings are related, but they continue to investigate the connections between all the people involved.
The charging documents against Burch said he was a member of the Selby Sider gang.
