Environmental group to look at Minn. water pollution

An environmental group says industrial facilities dumped more than 2 million pounds of toxic chemicals into Minnesota's waterways in 2007.

Environment Minnesota released a report Wednesday looking at toxic chemicals released by industrial facilities into the Mississippi River and other bodies of water.

The report compiles toxic chemical releases reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 2007, the most recent data available.

Besides the Mississippi, the report finds other rivers in Minnesota with large amounts of toxic dumping included the Rainy, the Minnesota and the St. Croix.

The group recommends industrial facilities switch from hazardous chemicals to safer alternatives as a way to reduce toxic discharges into waterways.
