Hiawatha LRT rolling again after accident with car

The Hiawatha LRT line resumed full operation last night, hours after a motorist was injured when his car was struck by the train at a Minneapolis intersection.

Metro Transit spokesman Bob Gibbons said witnesses saw a motorist turn off of Hiawatha Avenue and head west on 35th Street before the crash.

"In so doing it appears he drove around the gate arm and into the path of a southbound train," Gibbons said.

Gibbons said there's no official report of the driver's condition, but that witnesses report the injuries appeared significant.

No one on the train was injured in the accident. Gibbons said the driver will be subject to drug and alcohol tests which is standard procedure in an accident.
