Drivers in the Metro area will likely face detours and increased congestion this weekend as crews work on two major road projects.
All the northbound lanes on Interstate 35W from Highway 62 to Interstate 94 in south Minneapolis will be closed starting at 10 p.m. tonight. The lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 20.
All the ramps in this area will also be closed during the weekend.
The closures are necessary as crews perform pavement work as part of the ongoing reconstruction of Interstate 35W from Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis.

When the freeway reopens to traffic on Monday, the exit ramp from northbound Interstate 35W to 31st Street will reopen to traffic, but the exit ramp to 35th/36th Street will remain closed through September.
Department of Transportation officials recommend drivers take a detour along Highway 62 west to Highway 100 north to Interstate 394 east.
Drivers should also expect to encounter congestion as crews inspect various bridges on Interstate 94.
Crews will be inspecting bridges along both directions of freeway between Hwy 241 in Wright County and Hwy 252 in Brooklyn Center.
The work will be a on a rolling basis, meaning it will not result in long stretches of lane closures.
Short-term ramp closures will also be needed during the work, which will extend from approximately 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
