This week Minneapolis residents will hear details about a proposed new fee to cover the cost of thousands of street lights throughout the city.
The city is sponsoring two community meetings this week in an attempt to give residents more details about the new fee. Mayor R.T. Rybak proposed the new fee as a way to help the city make up for a reduction in state aid.
City officials say the city spends about $3 million a year to power and maintain around 17,000 streetlights and they say the cost to each single family property owner will be about $20 a year.
But, some city council members are concerned because the fee will be the same for homeowners regardless of how much their properties are worth.
