Minnesota's disabled veterans are able to use public transportation at no charge beginning Wednesday.
The benefit encompasses all fixed-route services in the state, including Metro Transit and the Hiawatha light-rail line. To qualify for free rides, disabled veterans need to show proper identification to transit operators.
The free ride benefit also extends to a personal care attendant who may be assisting a disabled veteran as they travel.
There are approximately 50,000 disabled veterans in Minnesota. The transit benefit was passed by the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Tim Pawlenty this year.
See http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/application/IDCard.asp for information on how to apply for an identification card.
