Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion announced today that he's asking the FBI to investigate the Metro Gang Strike Force. In a news release, Campion said he's making the request after reports found that Gang Strike Force officers shredded documents and disconnected computers at the headquarters last week. The reported incident occurred on the same day that the Legislative Auditor released a report that said the unit couldn't account for $18 thousand in cash and vehicles (which the Ramsey County Sheriff later accounted for).
"The strike force is an important resource in our statewide gang enforcement activities and has had a history of successful arrests and prevention efforts," Campion said in the news release. "Our goal is to reorganize and reopen the MGSF as quickly as possible, but not before we restore the integrity of the overall operation."
The news release said the FBI investigation will begin immediately.
