The first day of winter came to Minnesota with a bang with much of the state in a deep freeze.
The season's official arrival is timed at 6:04 a.m., but the latest round of wintry weather already moved into the state yesterday, as snow and high winds produced blizzard conditions in the southern part of the state.
It got so bad that the Department of Transportation issued a no-travel advisory over 25 counties because of the extremely bad driving conditions. As things kept getting worse last evening, plows were pulled off the roads until daybreak today.
High temperatures today are only expected to range from 5 below to 5 above zero, and the winds will make it feel much colder. Snow is likely to continue but let up by tonight as overnight lows drop to 10 below to 20 below.
Dan Miller of the National Weather Service in Duluth says these kind of weather conditions can be life-threatening for anyone who gets caught outside in it.
