One hundred workers at Duluth-based airplane maker Cirrus Design Corp. have been let go this week.

Company president and chief operating officer Brent Wouters says the layoffs trimmed the work force by 8 percent.

Wouters says the company is dealing with a difficult economy that has affected the aviation business. He says the company isn't selling as many airplanes this year as it hoped.

The cuts include 71 jobs in Duluth and 29 in Grand Forks. Cirrus now has 1,230 people company-wide.

Wouters says he's optimistic demand for Cirrus airplanes will rebound as the economy steadies.
