More than 20 public transit agencies around the country have been using GPS technology. The technology has allowed the agencies to keep better tabs on their fleets, and gives riders a tool to find out when their buses will arrive.
In the Twin Cities, Metro Transit has spent $12 million to outfit its buses with automatic vehicle location equipment. Officials at Metro Transit say it allows the agency to see buses like never before. The result is better schedules: the on-time percentage of buses has increased from the mid-80s to 90%.
