The University of Minnesota is launching an expanded version of a short, online course designed to help parents understand college drinking.
The U of M currently offers the two hour course to parents of enrolled students. The new effort is more expansive, so colleges elsewhere can use it as well. Marjorie Savage heads the university Parents Program and helped design the course.
"It covers a whole range of issues starting with what are your expectations. What do you think the drinking situation is on campus? Here are some statistics on what really is happening. Here are some talking points that you can talk to your student about," Savage said.
Colleges or individual parents can purchase the program.
Organizers hope to give parents tools to ease problem drinking by college students, as well as give parents accurate perceptions of campus alcohol use.
