The Pentagon says an attempt to shoot down a wayward satellite was a success. President Bush had ordered the Navy missile strike to keep fuel on the dead spy satellite from falling to Earth.

The United States shoots down a defunct spy satellite. Or, as officials put it, the "kill vehicle" successfully collided with the "target" at a combined speed of 22,000 mph about 130 miles above Earth's surface.
