St. Cloud is getting a state human rights office.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty made the announcement this morning at a human rights rally in St. Cloud celebrating Martin Luther King Junior Day.

The office has been a priority for surrounding cities for the past couple years but has had a few setbacks from cities not wanting to commit without state help.

Gov. Pawlenty says the Human Rights Department office will be a partnership between the surrounding cities and the state.

St. Cloud will now be one of four cities across the state that will have local investigative power for human rights violations.

The other cities are Duluth, St. Paul and Minneapolis.
