A 63-year old philosophy professor at St. John's University begins a 7,400 mile bike ride through Africa Saturday.
Gene Garver from Sartell, Minn., is one of only 50 people taking part in what's considered the world's longest bike tour, the Tour d'Afrique. It starts in Cairo, Egypt, and ends in Cape Town, south Africa, on May 14, 2008.
Garver says he's looking forward to the physically demanding trip.
"I love Africa, I love bicycles, and I love getting in over my head, and I'm doing all of that. I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think I'd be having a great time," says Garver.
Garver says he's making the trip in part to raise money and awareness for the Africa relief efforts of the Minnesota-based American Refugee Committee.
