David Kjar has become one of the most talked about classical musicians in recent years, playing one of the most difficult instruments, the baroque trumpet.
Kjar's 18th century "natural" trumpet has no valves to help him find the notes. He changes the pitch and volume by his lips. The sound the instrument produces is warm and not at all "brassy."
Kjar grew up in Northfield and is back in his home state performing with Lyra Baroque this Friday, Dec. 21, in Rochester, Minn., and Saturday, Dec. 22, in St. Paul, Minn.
He stopped by Minnesota Public Radio's Maude Moon Weyerhaeuser studio to talk with host Steve Staruch and give a few examples of his stunning virtuosity.
