This week seven emerging composers are in Minneapolis for the Minnesota Orchestra's 7th Annual Composer Institute. The event culminates on Friday evening with Osmo Vanska conducting each of the composers' works in concert.
The composers range in age from 24 to 38 and come from all across the U.S. The program is designed to nurture the participants' skills as composers, and give them a chance to hear their music performed by a major American orchestra.
In the days leading up to the concert, the composers are working with Vanska, composer Aaron Jay Kernis and musicians from the orchestra. Representatives from the music industry are also giving them insights into the business of music.
Minnesota Public Radio's Melissa Ousley is covering the event and hosts MPR's live broadcast of Friday night's concert. She's sharing her impressions of the institute with MPR hosts John Birge and Steve Staruch.
