A new crude oil pipeline will not be built across the land of one of Minnesota's oldest organic farms. The farm, Gardens of Eagan, has agreed to a settlement with the Minnesota Pipeline Company that would redirect part of a proposed 300-mile-long pipeline around the farm.
Normally pipeline builders use eminent domain to buy and use the land along their routes, including farmland. But Gardens of Eagan argued that building and maintaining the pipeline would violate organic growing standards set by the federal government.
MPR's Tom Crann spoke with Gardens of Eagan co-owner Atina Diffley about the settlement.
