How much of an emotional life do animals have? Can they feel more than hunger and pain? Scientist Jonathan Balcombe studies animal behavior and believes that if we open our eyes and really look at animals, we can see that they are individuals with a complex array of feelings.
It's easy to accept when you think about dolphins, chimps or elephants, but Balcombe told Mary Lucia that even chickens have personalities. He decided to write his book about animals and emotions, "Pleasurable Kingdom," after seeing two birds in the wild.
