The Flaming Lips started out in Oklahoma in the 1980s when indie rock was dubbed "college rock." Their then-contemporaries like The Chainsaw Kittens and The Jesus and Mary Chain are long gone, while The Lips not only carry on, but get better and more popular with age.
They're beloved by aging punks, alternative rock lovers from the '90s, and even the patchouli-scented jam-band crowd.
Chicago Sun-Times critic and radio host Jim DeRogatis is the author of "Staring at Sound," a new biography of the long-lived Oklahoman group.
