Meet Kaila White
Kaila White is a digital editor at MPR News, where she helps teams across the newsroom create content and develop strategies to serve and grow online audiences. As part of that, she manages Reverb, an MPR News initiative and reporting team focused on serving younger (and young-at-heart) Minnesotans.
Before moving to Minneapolis in 2022, Kaila spent 10 years at The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com in Phoenix. She became The Republic’s first digital-first reporter in 2014, a role that built a foundation in social media newsgathering, audience engagement, trending topics, SEO, metrics and a focus on young adults that still drives her work today. She also served as an editor, leading the daily breaking news team, launching a podcast team and coaching storytellers to perform in live events.
Kaila’s work has earned several distinctions, including a Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting for her and her team’s work on the podcast “The Wall,” awards from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists and the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association, and as a finalist in the Gannett Greatest Awards from the USA Today Network. She has participated in various programs and accelerators, including the Online News Association Women’s Leadership Accelerator, Catalyze from Valley Leadership and Gannett’s Emerging Leaders Program.
Kaila has dual bachelor’s degrees in journalism and English (creative writing) from Arizona State University and graduated from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. Kaila is a cocktail enthusiast and thinks the best drinks in Minneapolis are the Petit Jolie L’Orange at Café and Bar Lurcat, the Cowboy Gimlet at Bina’s and, well, anything at Meteor.
