Clearing skies, lighter winds and a cold October air mass will bring widespread frost and freezing temperatures to much of western Minnesota Saturday morning. For many locations, this will be the first frost and freezing temperatures of the fall season.

Low temperatures Saturday morning will dip into the 30s across most of southern Minnesota. The inner Twin Cities metro core should hover around 40 degrees.

The frost advisory covers much of south-central Minnesota and bumps right up to the far western Twin Cities.

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 to 32 expected.

* WHERE...All of eastern North Dakota and the northwest quarter of Minnesota.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to 9 AM CDT Saturday. * IMPACTS...Freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Temperatures will be varied throughout the valley, with some areas dropping below freezing while others hover around the freezing mark.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

Temperatures will moderate this weekend. Lows should remain slightly above freezing Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, highs will return to the 60s across much of Minnesota, with 70 degrees possible again in southwestern Minnesota.
