Doctors are learning about a new tool that can help them determine what the best treatment option is for each individual patient.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that 99 percent of all patients they studied had some sort of genetic variant that impacts the way the body processes common medications. That's one way that your DNA can provide important information for doctors deciding how to treat an illness.
It's called individualized medicine and it's the topic of a conference happening this week at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Dr. Keith Stewart, who is the director of the Mayo Clinic's Center for Individualized Medicine.
