Norman Mailer and Bill Buckley had a lot in common — both were Ivy League-educated, World War II veterans. Both were bestselling authors who rose to fame in their 20s. Both were media heavyweights in the 1960s with devoted followings.

When it came to politics, however, they couldn't have been more different. The two disagreed on nearly every major issue of the time: Vietnam, civil rights, feminism. That didn't stop them from being friends.

Kevin Schultz's new book, "Buckley and Mailer: The Difficult Friendship that Shaped the Sixties," digs into the contentious relationship between the two public figures.

Schultz joined MPR News' Tom Crann to discuss the book and the reasons why such a bipartisan friendship seems so shocking today.
