What should presidential candidates understand about Midwestern voters?
Midwestern appeal has often helped presidential candidates. When President Barack Obama won his first term in 2008, he did so with heavy support from states in the region. In 2016, the Midwest played a pivotal role in the election of President Donald Trump.
Contenders in the 2020 race appear to be paying attention.
Multiple candidates have paid visits to the Midwest. On Monday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren held a town hall at Macalester College, and Sen. Bernie Sanders is expected to make an appearance at the State Fair on Saturday.
MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with Philip Chen, assistant professor of political science at Beloit College, and John C. Austin, director of the Michigan Economic Center, about the key issues that matter to Midwest voters and how the region could affect the coming presidential elections.
